To celebrate Mexico’s Day of the Dead, the UNAM-UK Centre for Mexican Studies created an altar at the Horniman Museum and Gardens in London.
This year’s offering was dedicated to Dr. Jane Goodall and Dr. Julieta Fierro, two remarkable scientists — one British, one Mexican — whose lifelong contributions to science, education, and environmental awareness continue to inspire generations across borders.
The altar combined traditional Mexican elements such as papel picado, cempasúchil flowers, sugar skulls, and candles, with symbols of scientific curiosity and exploration. Visitors were invited to learn about the Day of the Dead as a living expression of memory, identity, and cultural dialogue.
Through this collaboration, the UNAM-UK Centre reaffirmed its commitment to fostering intercultural understanding and celebrating the shared values that connect Mexico and the United Kingdom.
